The Staircase

I’m getting ready to go to my new school. Of course at school I will have a lot of new friends, one of them is from my side bench one, her name is Mutia.

During break time, I asked Mutia to go with me around the school so that I would know every corners of this school.

Until then Mutia and I passed through a hallway where the hallway was a bit dark and there was a dark staircase leading to the top floor that was blocked by the sun. So what is visible from below is only darkness above.

Mutia asked me to go upstairs but I was reluctant, in the end she went up alone. How dare she. But after I waited even for the bell to ring again, Mutia had not returned from above. I shouted his name but there was no answer.

Because I’m a disciplined person and quite indifferent, so I left Mutia without thinking anything else. However, during the lesson, Mutia did not return. I got worried. Until the second break bell rang, I invited another friend of mine, this time her name was Wida, to accompany me to the stairs earlier.

Wida didn’t really understand what I meant, but she seemed to agree. We started walking down the hall and…

…I can’t find the stairs.

Wida asked me if I was really sure that there were stairs here. Of course I said yes, but since I’m new here, it’s possible that wrong passages could occur. I even said that our classmate named Mutia climbed the stairs and hasn’t come down until now. I also even showed my concern.

Wida seemed to respond with a bit of surprise until we looked in other alleys. But still we didn’t find the stairs.

A man who looked like a school guard came up to us who was confused and asked why. I then recounted what I remembered briefly.

“There are lots of stairs to reach the upper room, may I know which one? Or near what room?”

I only remember the room with the globe in the window, maybe it was the library. I still wasn’t sure and explained as best I could.

The guard seemed to understand what I meant and began to escort me to the room in question. Wida and I followed him until he stopped somewhere.

“Is this room you mean?” asked the guard.

I looked, and nodded. Yes, he knew what I mean.

“But where are the stairs?” I asked then.

I couldn’t see anything except the walls and walls in the hallway that were slightly exposed to the sun.

“There are no stairs here, dear.” The guard replied which shocked me.

I tried very hard to convince him to believe it. But all he had was confusion. Finally I was taken to a place that seemed to be the guard’s room and he started to say something while Wida was still faithfully accompanying me.

“You dear may be in a daze, she needs to rest here for a while because there are never stairs in the hallway.” The man started the story.

Then he continued, “But you two don’t tell anyone, I’ll tell you something your friends are afraid of.”

Wida and I agreed.

“It’s known to be haunted here. But yes, which school is not haunted. Every school has its own story.” He said while taking a deep breath.

“In the corner of the room, which is near the hallway to sixth grade room, you can often see a big black man. And the tree at the edge of the court, a white shadow of a woman often flashed above it. Then many more. I’m the caretaker of the school here, so I know whatever happens day and night at this school.”

“Until a tragedy occurs, adding to the eeriness of this school. There was a student who was always bullied by her friends until she finally committed suicide from upstairs.”

“The student’s name is Mutia.”
