Mosque is Too Noisy!

Masjid terlalu berisik

My dear friend, I apologize beforehand for this inconvenience. In some Muslim majority countries, living side by side with mosques within a 500 meter radius is almost inevitable.

If there is a complaint about a mosque that uses its external loudspeakers too often outside of the call to prayer (athan) or outside the understandable times, it is true that there are one or two of the dozens of mosques that even I as a Muslim complain about it. But don’t worry, such mosques aren’t so many.

I once came across a mosque where it was still dawn, about an hour before dawn it was using outside loudspeakers. Although the intention is good to wake up Muslims for night prayers, sometimes the invitations that come out of the mosque loudspeakers take so long and are very disturbing.

Imagine a person who really needs extra sleep but the loudspeaker is actually blocking his rest time. In fact, not infrequently, the use of loudspeakers at inappropriate times can damage the quality of worship of the Muslims themselves.

Then how does Islam respond to the noise pollution produced by mosques?

Our glorious prophet, our Prophet Muhammad. once said:

“From Abu Said, he told me that Rasulullah SAW performed itikaf at the mosque. In the midst of itikaf he heard jamaah reading the Koran aloud. Rasulullah then lifted the curtain and said, ‘Please mind, every one of you is doing prayer to God. Do not some of you hurt some others. Also, don’t let some of you elevate it over others in reading. ‘Or he said,’ in prayer. ‘”(Narrated by Abu Dawud)

Muslims are not allowed to interfere with other people’s activities.

Some Middle Eastern countries which are actually Muslims majority, such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, seem to have strict rules regarding the use of mosque loudspeakers, even the sound output should not exceed 85 decibels. But I’m still not sure about other countries.

So dear friends, it is actually a shame that there are still mosques that use excessive external loudspeakers, let alone those that interfere with people’s activities. Those who need concentration, those with toothache, the elderly, and so on, they need calm.

A mosque was built to shelter and protect the surrounding community, so it is not just a place of worship, but also a place to gain knowledge and socialize, a place that becomes a role model for those around it.

The function of the mosque will be damaged if the mosque ignores this.

We also need to realize that some Muslims still need special education about noise pollution.
